Last week I celebrated my first official father’s day! I must say it was the best day I’d ever had my wife got me a grill and instead of going out to dinner to a crowded restaurants I decided to grill myself on my new grill. Started off with breakfast in bed from my wife with father’s day cards and off to church. It was a great service with a tribute to fathers and to the store to get steaks to grill. Once we got home we relaxed for a little while and I decided to cut the grass before grilling to keep up with the neighbors. Once I began grilling there was no stopping me I’d marinated the meat steak, country style ribs and bratwurst as well as corn on the cob on the grill. Once it was time to eat I feasted like it was the last supper and enjoyed every bit of it.
That was the day in a nutshell but the best part about being celebrated on Father’s Day when I was able to read my cards. My wife got me a card that was extremely heartfelt as usual but the card I received from my son was priceless. My wife had planned this big surprise for me weeks before Father’s Day without realizing it wasn’t for another week or two and gave me my grill. I decided to wait on the cards because I wanted to have something to enjoy the day of. Once I opened my son’s card and read it I became extremely emotional because although he’s seven months and my wife wrote in the card she made it an effort to ensure something symbolized his giving it to me with his hand print. I initially thought that’s how the card was made until I touched it and felt that it wasn’t something that was printed on the card but instead something she’d done while I was out. It was the best card I’d ever received and meant so much to me.
I say all that to say being a stay at home dad has many challenges. Sometimes being in the house all day with no adult interaction can get very lonely at times but I’ve began to realize the time spent with my son on a daily basis is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Being able to be recognized on Father’s Day was something that was so special and heartfelt to me because it’s something I’d been want for a long time and this year I was able to receive it from my very own son. I’m Thankful for a wife who gives me the opportunity to do what many women wouldn’t allow a man to do sacrificing time and moments in their lives to make a sustaining living for their families. This year was a great Father’s Day my first and there will never be any like this again.
