A few weeks ago, as I was changing Matthew, his hand began to gravitate to his private parts. I was a little disturbed initially because I thought, "wow, this little guy is only 4 months old. Is this something he should be doing?" Then I remembered a conversation that Ciji and I had with our friends a few months earlier, about how children begin to discover parts of their body.
I remember when Matthew discovered his hands and how fascinated he was when he realized he actually could begin holding onto objects. I also remember when he discovered his little feet during a diaper change. He playfully held them and pulled them. He still hasn't gotten to the point where he can put his feet in his mouth, but his hands are the new best thing since the pacifier was discovered. It's interesting to me that the older he gets, the more he realizes the parts of his body, and even the sound of his voice.
He enjoys hearing himself and lately when he wakes he begins his day with making really loud noises. When my wife went back to work Matthew would communicate with her via video chat by making a particular noise they would only do back and forth. It sounded like a hissing cat. Now she has taught him a high pitched scream that he loves doing everyday.
Luckily for Ciji and I, our friends prepared us for a lot. Kudos to the Coleman's and the William's who especially helped prepare Ciji, who had no idea that little baby boys have erections. LOL. It's funny how people are so sensitive when it comes to these topics. Rather, it isn't until it actually happens that they freak out, even though it is something that's pretty normal.
When Matthew first began being intrigued by his genitals my wife freaked out. It was the most hilarious thing to me and quite disturbing at the same time. Ciji and I obviously had never been in this situation and we were quite new to parenting. However, it seemed like the more he did it the funnier it became. Then we realized that it was a phase. Now I rarely see him fascinated with his man parts because he is so interested with his feet.
I found an article that may help you, just as it helped me titled, "Understanding Early Sexual Development."
