We all know that typically you get less sleep with a little one, since they are always waking up in the middle of the night. However, as they get older they tend to sleep better. My son has been doing well with sleeping. He has been giving my wife and I a minimal of 5 hours and a max of at least 6 hours at night without waking up. I think because we talked so much about it, he wanted to show us that he's more then capable of doing less, if need be.
Last night we were prepared as we usually do with bottles prepped before he went to bed. We made sure he was nice and clean and snuggled in his sleep sack. He was sleep around ten so instead of waking him at midnight for a feeding we decided to allow him to stay sleep with the hopes of him sleeping longer than usual. As my wife was finishing up her midnight pump he decided he would wake on his own. Not only did he wake at 12;45 am he decided he would wake at 4 am and instead of sleeping in once it was time for my wife and I to wake, he decided he would be our alarm clocks and wake us in the morning at 7 am as well.
Since my wife needed to get enough sleep for work she asked me to do the 4 am feeding, which I did with the goal of feeding him and getting him right back to sleep. He cooperated. After feeding, burping and changing him he went to sleep but then came the struggle for me to get back to sleep. It usually doesn't take me long to fall back to sleep ever, but I was so awake from taking care of our little one. Once I finally got back to sleep I was awaken to more crying when 7 am came along. Not knowing what time it was, with hardly any sleep at all, and not being able to think clearly, I was quite confused.
Since my son and I were awake we had to make the best of our time. For him it was just a quick break before heading back to sleep and for me it was either stay awake and be productive or fall back to sleep after sending my wife off to work. I would have to say that throughout the entire day sleep got the best of he and I. Not only did we sleep more than half the day away but we stayed in our pajamas the entire day as well. It seemed like every time I was awake and attempting to get him back to sleep it would cause me to sleep with him. It caused for a long day but I would have to say it was well worth being able to get the extra sleep. Lets just hope and pray that tonight is a better night and he allows us to get plenty of sleep to make it through the day tomorrow, because daddy has lots of homework to get done.
